While the Egyptian Walking Onion starts growing like other onions, it eventually begins to differ from other onions in the early Spring. While other onions produce a round flower, the Walking Onion starts growing a cluster of little onions at the top of its stalks. Eventually the weight of these bulblets, or topsets, cause the stalks to fall to the ground, and take root, thus starting a new mother plant.
Ranging in size from a 1/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter, the topsets or bulblets are complete plants, essentially miniature onions. They reach maturity by late Summer. While most Egyptian Walking Onions will not produce topsets during their first year, producing only green stalks. Don't fret. The following year they will produce numerous bulblets. Keeping the mother bulb in the ground, while harvesting the topsets will make this unique onion a perennial vegetable.
Our walking onions have been saved and propagated at the Eden Hall Farm at Chatham University. Shipping September through November.
