Its journey from a family-maintained Ukrainian heirloom through the Heritage Seed Library and into contemporary seed-saving networks makes it an excellent example of how family stewardship and community seed conservation preserve agricultural biodiversity across generations.

Origins, Migration, and Heirloom History

Poletschka is an Eastern European heirloom pole bean whose documented history leads to western Ukraine. Adaptive Seeds traces its seed stock through the Heritage Seed Library in England, which received the variety as a family heirloom from Irma Jacyna of the western Ukrainian village of Kostilinyky. Some seed records have associated the bean more broadly with Poland, reflecting the intertwined agricultural and cultural history of the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands, but the strongest documented provenance identifies western Ukraine. Our Poletschka Dry Pole Bean seeds were acquired from our friends at Adaptive Seeds.

Poletschka belongs to the common bean species Phaseolus vulgaris, domesticated in the Americas thousands of years ago. Common beans were carried to Europe following European contact with the Americas and became deeply incorporated into European farming and cooking. Over generations, farmers selected locally adapted landraces for characteristics such as maturity, climbing habit, seed color, flavor, storage quality, and performance under particular growing conditions. Poletschka represents this larger history: an American-domesticated crop transformed through generations of European farmer selection into a distinctive Eastern European heirloom.

Its more recent migration is also a good example of the importance of seed-saving networks. From a Ukrainian family collection, Poletschka entered Britain's Heritage Seed Library and subsequently reached seed growers and preservationists elsewhere. Adaptive Seeds obtained its stock from the Heritage Seed Library and has maintained and distributed the variety through its Seed Ambassadors work.

Appearance and Characteristics

Poletschka is a vigorous climbing bean grown primarily for its striking small, round, glossy black seeds. Adaptive Seeds describes it as early and prolific under Pacific Northwest conditions, while another grow-out recorded vines reaching approximately 6 feet. The green pods are roughly 4¼ inches long in one documented grow-out and become increasingly constricted around the developing seeds as they mature.

Although primarily classified as a pole dry bean, Poletschka is unusually versatile because its pods can be eaten young as snap beans and the developing seeds can also be harvested as fresh shelling beans. Its climbing habit makes a sturdy trellis, fence, bean tower, or other vertical support essential.

Culinary Uses

Poletschka is especially valued as a dry black bean. Its small black seeds develop a rich bean flavor; Adaptive Seeds describes its flavor as having greater depth than typical bush-type black beans. Once dried and cooked, the beans can be used in soups, stews, bean-and-grain dishes, casseroles, salads, spreads, and traditional Eastern European preparations. They can readily substitute for other small black beans in Caribbean, Latin American, and North American recipes as well.

For a fresh vegetable, harvest the pods while they are young and tender. Allow them to develop somewhat longer for fresh shelling beans. For their principal use as dry beans, leave pods on the vines until they become brown, brittle, and completely mature.

Growing Tips

Plant Poletschka outdoors after danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Beans germinate poorly in cold, saturated soil, so waiting for reasonably warm conditions generally produces faster, more uniform emergence. Choose a location receiving full sun and provide moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage luxuriant vine growth at the expense of flowers and pods.

Install the trellis before or immediately after planting so young vines can begin climbing without disturbance. Adaptive Seeds recommends rows approximately 1 foot apart and thinning plants to about 3–6 inches apart. The variety can also climb corn or sunflowers when those support crops are established sufficiently early.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, flowering, and pod formation, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging. Mulching after the soil has warmed can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Sowing Depth and Days to Maturity

Sow seeds approximately 1 inch deep. Adaptive Seeds lists Poletschka at approximately 90 days to dry-bean maturity under its Pacific Northwest growing conditions. Other grow-outs have reported approximately 108 days to dry seed, illustrating how maturity can vary substantially with climate, planting date, temperature, and local growing conditions. Gardeners should therefore plan on roughly 90–110 days for fully mature dry beans.

Harvesting Guidance

For snap beans, harvest while pods are young, green, tender, and before the developing seeds cause pronounced bulges. For shelling beans, wait until seeds have enlarged inside the pods but remain soft and moist. For dry beans, allow pods to mature and dry as completely as possible on the vines.

Harvest dry pods before extended periods of autumn rain. If necessary, pods that have reached physiological maturity can be brought under cover to finish drying. Shell the beans by hand for small quantities, then allow the seed to dry thoroughly before placing it into airtight storage. Adaptive Seeds suggests a simple dryness test: properly dried beans should shatter rather than mash when struck.

For seed saving, select seed from numerous healthy, productive, true-to-type plants rather than relying on only one or two vines. Common beans are predominantly self-pollinating, although occasional crossing can occur, so gardeners maintaining Poletschka for long-term heirloom preservation should provide reasonable separation from other flowering Phaseolus vulgaris varieties.

BEAN GROWING GUIDE
