Origins, Migration, and Domestication: Nasturtiums originate in the cool, mountainous regions of western South America, particularly Peru and Bolivia, where wild forms of Tropaeolum majus thrived in well-drained soils and mild climates. Indigenous communities valued the plant for both ornamental beauty and culinary use, especially its peppery leaves and flowers. Following Spanish colonization in the 16th century, nasturtiums were carried to Europe, where they quickly became popular in monastery gardens and ornamental landscapes. Over time, European horticulturists selectively bred the species for compact growth, vibrant coloration, and prolonged blooming, leading to dwarf forms like the Jewel Mix (nanum type). This heirloom blend reflects centuries of selection for richly colored blooms—reds, oranges, and yellows—combined with manageable plant size suitable for borders and containers.
Appearance and Characteristics: Jewel Mix nasturtiums are compact, bushy annuals typically growing 10–14 inches tall, with a spreading habit that creates a dense, rounded form. Their distinctive rounded, shield-like (peltate) leaves are soft green and slightly waxy, providing a lush backdrop to the bright, jewel-toned flowers. Blooms are semi-double to double, with layered petals that give a fuller, more ornamental look than single-flowered types. The flowers sit just above the foliage, creating a vivid display that attracts pollinators while also offering visual impact in small garden spaces.
Gardening Uses: Highly versatile, Jewel Mix nasturtiums are ideal for edging garden beds, filling containers, lining pathways, or softening the edges of raised beds. Their compact size makes them especially suitable for urban gardens and small-space growing systems. In addition to ornamental use, they function as companion plants—helping deter certain pests such as aphids and squash bugs while attracting beneficial insects like pollinators. Their edible flowers and leaves add both color and a peppery flavor to salads, garnishes, and herbal preparations, aligning well with culturally rooted culinary traditions.
Growing Tips and Sow Depth: Nasturtiums thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer moderately poor, well-drained soil; overly rich soil can lead to excessive foliage with fewer blooms. Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost, as they do not transplant well due to sensitive roots. For best germination, soak seeds overnight before planting. Sow seeds approximately ½ to 1 inch deep, spacing them 8–12 inches apart. Jewel Mix performs well in USDA Zones 2–11 as an annual and requires minimal fertilization, making it a low-input crop suitable for sustainable gardening systems.
Harvesting Guidance: Both leaves and flowers can be harvested throughout the growing season once plants are well established. Pick flowers in the morning for peak freshness and flavor, selecting fully open blooms. Leaves are best harvested young and tender for culinary use. Regular harvesting encourages continued flowering. At the end of the season, allow some flowers to mature and form seed pods if seed saving is desired; seeds can be collected once they dry on the plant and stored for future planting, preserving this heirloom variety for generations to come.
