The Congo Watermelon is an American heirloom variety developed in the mid-20th century and prized for its large size, adaptability, and sweet flavor. It gained popularity among home gardeners and market growers in the southern United States, where hot summers and long growing seasons allowed it to thrive. Its reputation grew not only because of its massive fruits but also due to its reliability and resistance to common watermelon diseases.
Appearance and Characteristics
Congo Watermelon is distinguished by its oblong fruits that often weigh 25–40 pounds, though some can grow even larger. The rind is dark green with subtle mottling, providing durability for storage and transport. Inside, the flesh is a bright scarlet red, juicy, and remarkably sweet, with a high sugar content measuring up to 9.5% Brix. Seeds are black and medium-sized, typical of traditional seeded watermelons.
Culinary Uses
Like most watermelons, Congo is enjoyed fresh, sliced, and chilled on hot days. Its high sugar content makes it particularly refreshing and ideal for fruit salads, agua frescas, or blended into smoothies. The rind can also be pickled, a practice common in Southern culinary traditions. Because of its size, a single melon can easily serve a family or be the centerpiece for community gatherings.
Growing Tips
Congo Watermelon thrives in warm climates and is best suited for USDA zones 4–11, though it performs most reliably where summers are hot and long. Sow seeds directly in the ground after the last frost, planting them 1 inch deep in well-drained, sandy loam soil enriched with compost. Space hills about 6–8 feet apart, with 3–4 seeds per hill, thinning to the strongest plant. Like other watermelons, Congo requires full sun, warm soil temperatures (70–90°F), and consistent watering during fruit set.
Harvesting Guidance
Congo Watermelon requires about 90–100 days to maturity. Signs of ripeness include a yellow spot where the fruit rests on the ground, a drying tendril nearest to the stem, and a deep, hollow sound when thumped. Due to their size, handle carefully to avoid cracking. Harvested fruits can be stored in a cool, shaded location for several weeks, maintaining sweetness and quality.
