'Fiesta del Sol’ is a compact, cultivated variety of Tithonia rotundifolia, commonly known as the Mexican Sunflower. Native to Mexico and Central America, Tithonia rotundifolia thrives in warm climates and is well adapted to dry conditions. It has been widely cultivated in gardens for its ability to attract pollinators and provide vibrant color throughout the growing season. Ideal for pollinator gardens, borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. Works well in containers due to its compact growth habit. A great companion plant for vegetables, as it attracts beneficial insects.
Appearance: ‘Fiesta del Sol’ is a dwarf variety, reaching about 2-3 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, making it more manageable than the standard Mexican Sunflower, which can grow up to 6 feet. It produces dazzling orange daisy-like blooms that measure about 2-3 inches in diameter. The petals surround a bright yellow central disk, creating a striking contrast. The leaves are deep green, broad, and slightly toothed, providing a lush backdrop for the flowers. Blooms from mid-summer to fall, thriving in heat and continuing to flower even in drought conditions. Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens.
Growing Tips: Easily grown from seed; sow directly outdoors after the last frost or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Prefers full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily). Well-draining, moderately fertile to sandy soil is ideal. It tolerates poor soil but dislikes heavy clay. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, but regular watering will promote more blooms. Space plants about 18-24 inches apart to allow good air circulation and prevent disease. While this variety is compact, it may still benefit from light staking in windy areas. Removing spent flowers encourages continuous blooming.
Generally resistant to pests and diseases, though it may occasionally attract aphids or powdery mildew in humid conditions.
