Verbena bonariensis

Seeds per packet: ~100

Packed for 2025

Purpletop Vervain (Verbena bonariensis) is a tall, slender perennial plant known for its striking appearance and ease of care. Verbena bonariensis is an herbaceous plant native to South America. It has been introduced to North America through the horticulture industry. This variety is native to Argentina and Brazil, which makes sense when you realize that the species name is derived from 'Buenos Aires'. It's a popular choice in gardens and landscapes.

This plant is characterized by its tall, thin stems that can reach up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in height, giving it a delicate, airy look. Atop these stems are clusters of small, vibrant purple flowers that bloom from early summer through to the first frost in autumn. The flowers are nectar-rich, making them a favorite among butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

Verbena bonariensis has a clumping growth habit with sparse foliage at the base, allowing for lower-growing plants to be planted beneath it. This attribute makes it an excellent choice for adding height and texture to mixed borders without overshadowing other plants.

This plant is relatively easy to grow and can thrive in a range of conditions. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and is best suited to well-drained soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during prolonged dry spells will keep it looking its best.

Purpletop Vervain is low-maintenance, requiring minimal care beyond the occasional watering and deadheading to encourage continued blooming. It's generally free of serious pests and diseases, making it a hassle-free addition to the garden.

It readily self-seeds, which can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. While it ensures a continued presence in the garden, it can also lead to the plant spreading beyond its intended area. Gardeners may need to manage its spread by removing unwanted seedlings.

Due to its height and the airy nature of its flowering stems, Verbena bonariensis is often used to add vertical interest to garden beds and borders. It's also commonly used in wildflower gardens, cottage gardens, and as a backdrop for lower-growing perennials and annuals.

The flowers are a significant source of nectar for butterflies and bees, making this plant an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens or for those looking to attract wildlife.

Overall, Purpletop Vervain offers a combination of visual appeal, ease of care, and ecological benefits, making it a favored choice for gardeners looking to add height, color, and wildlife value to their landscapes.
