Cucumis sativus

Contains ~ 50 seeds per packet

Germination: 96% May 2026  Packet for 2026

Origins, Migration, and History of Domestication:
The Marketmore cucumber traces its lineage to the ancient domestication of cucumbers in the foothills of the Himalayas in present-day India, where Cucumis sativus was first cultivated over 3,000 years ago. From India, cucumbers spread westward into Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean, becoming a staple in Greek and Roman diets, and later traveling into Europe through trade and conquest. By the time cucumbers reached the Americas in the 16th century, they had already diversified into numerous regional forms. The Marketmore variety itself is a modern heirloom developed in the United States in the mid-20th century, particularly by breeders at Cornell University, who sought to improve disease resistance and adaptability. “Marketmore 76,” the most widely recognized strain, was released in 1976 and has since become a standard for home gardeners and market growers due to its reliability and vigor.

Appearance and Characteristics:
Marketmore cucumbers are known for their uniform, straight shape and deep green skin, often reaching 8–9 inches in length. The skin is slightly textured with small white spines, while the interior flesh is crisp, pale green, and nearly seedless when harvested young. This variety is prized for its resistance to common cucumber diseases such as powdery mildew and cucumber mosaic virus, making it especially dependable in diverse growing conditions. The vines are vigorous and productive, producing an abundant harvest over a sustained period.

Culinary Uses:
Marketmore cucumbers are classic slicing cucumbers, valued for their refreshing flavor and firm texture. They are ideal for fresh eating in salads, sandwiches, and vegetable platters, and they hold up well in light pickling recipes. Their mild sweetness and low bitterness make them a favorite for raw preparations, including cucumber water, chilled soups, and traditional dishes across cultures.

Growing Tips and Sow Depth:
Marketmore cucumbers thrive in full sun and warm soil, performing best in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Direct sow seeds after the danger of frost has passed, when soil temperatures reach at least 65–70°F. Seeds should be planted at a sowing depth of approximately ½ to 1 inch, spaced 12–18 inches apart in rows or hills. Consistent watering is essential, particularly during flowering and fruit development, to ensure even growth and prevent bitterness. Trellising is recommended to promote air circulation, reduce disease, and produce straighter fruits.

Harvesting Guidance:
Harvest Marketmore cucumbers when they reach 6–9 inches in length for optimal flavor and texture. Fruits should be firm, uniformly green, and free from yellowing, which indicates over ripeness. Frequent harvesting encourages continued production throughout the growing season. Using clean, sharp tools or gently twisting the fruit from the vine helps prevent damage to the plant and ensures ongoing productivity.
