Italian common myrtle (Myrtus communis) is a Mediterranean native and an evergreen shrub with small white flowers and dark green, glossy leaves. It is commonly used as an ornamental plant, often seen in gardens and parks. It is also used in traditional herbal medicine as it contains flavonoids, triterpenes, and tannins, which have antiseptic, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties.
It is often used in tea and tinctures to treat digestive problems and help with respiratory issues. The fragrant leaves are also used in cosmetics, perfumes, and incense. The myrtle's berries are edible and often used in jams, jellies, and syrups. Northern Italians make a dark purple liquor called "Mirto," along with a pink version (that looks way too much like Pepto Bismol) known as "Crema al Mirto" or "Crema di Mirto" with the addition of cream.
