The Nadmorska Rutabaga is a unique heirloom variety of rutabaga (Brassica napus var. napobrassica) originating from Poland, particularly along coastal regions. Its name, "Nadmorska," translates to "coastal," hinting at its adaptability to cooler climates and coastal growing conditions. This variety is cherished by gardeners and cooks alike for its excellent flavor and ability to store well, making it a great addition to any cold-season garden!
Characteristics: Nadmorska typically produces medium to large, round to slightly oval roots. The skin is a mix of purple on the upper part, where the root is exposed to sunlight, and creamy yellow below. The interior is golden yellow, smooth, and fine-grained, offering a rich, sweet, and earthy flavor. This variety is hardy and robust, with lush, leafy green tops that are also edible. Mature roots typically weigh around 1–2 pounds but can grow larger under optimal conditions.
Growing Requirements: Nadmorska thrives in cool to temperate climates, making it an excellent choice for fall and early winter harvests. Prefers well-drained, loamy soil enriched with organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal. Plant seeds or seedlings 6–8 inches apart, with rows spaced about 18–24 inches. Full sun is best, though it tolerates partial shade.
Unique Features: Its coastal origin gives it excellent frost resistance, making it sweeter when harvested after a light frost. Nadmorska is versatile in the kitchen, used for mashing, roasting, stews, soups, or raw in salads for a crunchy texture.
Tips for Success: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to encourage even root development. Thin seedlings early to reduce competition and promote healthy root growth. Generally resistant to many pests, though it may need protection from cabbage root maggots and flea beetles.
