Cornelian cherry is a hardy shrub or small tree often used as an ornamental landscaping plant. Native to Eurasia, and particularly popular in the Caucasus region, it produces beautiful, edible fruits that are high in vitamins and minerals. They are not generally eaten raw, but make excellent jams, jellies, sauces, and beverages. The wood of this species is incredibly hard and durable. It's so dense it actually sinks in water (most woods float). Ancient Greek craftspeople utilized it almost exclusively for their spears, javelins, and bows. 'Redstone' is a very productive red-fruited cultivar with olive-shaped fruits (some are yellow, some are pear-shaped).
Our seed comes from Sheffield's Seed Company in Locke, NY. Growing Info, follow in order: Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours. Stratification: warm stratify for 180 days, cold stratify for 90 days. Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed. Other: Sporadic germination will occur over a 2-3 year period. To grow this plant successfully, plant your Redstone cornelian cherry in an area of your garden that receives full to partial sun and has well-drained soil.
Water your shrub regularly, but avoid over-watering or wetting the foliage. Fertilize your plant once or twice a year with a balanced fertilizer to help promote healthy growth and fruit production. Prune it once or twice a year to help promote its shape and encourage the growth of new healthy foliage. Provide mulch to help retain moisture and reduce weed pressure. If it's planted in a container, repot it every few years to ensure its roots have enough space to grow.
